The Walk to Ras Al Ain

London | 25 April 2014, '99 Pomegranates' - dedicated to the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

"The Walk to Ras Al Ain" by Alexandra Kharibian
Performed by Lusine Hakobyan

Born and based in London, Alexandra Kharibian is of Armenian and European decent. The piece 'The Walk to Ras Al-Ain' was inspired by her Armenian grandmother's story of survival during the events that took place from 1915-1923 in the Ottoman Empire at a time when hundreds of thousands of Armenians were forcibly removed from their homes and communities. The exiled people were sent on Death Marches to camps in the Syrian Desert, one of which was in Ras Al-Ain. Many of the survivors fled abroad, never to return to the land of their birth.

"Through this performance I am looking at how exiled Diaspora keep their culture and traditions alive through the memories of their heritage and language."
